Manchester United suffered one of the biggest defeats in recent seasons, going down 5-0 at home to sworn enemies Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday evening.
In-form Mohamed Salah led Jurgen Klopp’s side with a stunning hat-trick, which was accompanied by strikes from Diogo Jota and Naby Keita.
United could not get even a consolation, with the defeat piling more pressure on coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
The players took to social media to make their feelings known following the loss, with Harry Maguire sending an apology to the fans.
Here is how the players reacted;
“We apologise to the fans, it was nowhere near good enough for this club. They stuck with us right to the end and we appreciate that but as a club, we have to do better,” he said.
Adding: “I am so disappointed, we gave them so many chances. They were so clinical, we had a lot of chances ourselves but I am a defender and to concede four in the first half especially at Old Trafford is nowhere near good enough”
How about Ole Gunnar?
“It’s not easy to say something apart from it’s the darkest day I’ve had leading these players and we weren’t good enough, individually and as a team. You can’t give a team like Liverpool those chances, unfortunately we did. The whole performance wasn’t good enough, that’s for sure.
“We’ve created openings, they’ve had chances and they’ve been clinical. We didn’t take our chances early on and the third goal is the one that decided the game.”
United have a tough fixture schedule, with their next match away at Tottenham, before another away clash in the Champions League, against Atalanta.
